She rolled her eyes at his compliment, choosing not to respond. At his question, she sighed, looking at the ground as she thought. Was there some place where she could meet him? He wanted her as soon as he could have her, and she had been taught to wait until marriage even if she wanted to badly. Finally glancing up at him, she took a deep breath before talking.
"If I knew marriage was a definite between us then I might consider it."
She blushed brightly at her words, quickly dropping her eyes away from him.

Robin looked at her in stunned surprise. He had been thinking about it for days now, wondering if he should just do it, just ask her. Now, with her saying those words, he knew he couldn't, not for a while. With just those words, Marian had made any proposal from him seem like a way for him to get what he wanted, like he was asking her with simply one goal in mind.
"Damn it, Marian." He spoke in frustration, turning and walking away a few steps before looking apologetic at his words. "I did not mean that. Sorry."
Now she was going to think he was avoiding the subject of marriage again. It just kept getting better and better, was all he could think with an annoyed sigh.

At his outburst, she took a few steps back. She had not expected such a reaction from him and could not help but be shocked at his words. As he apologised, she found herself staying those few paces away from him.
"What was that about?"
She still looked shocked and slightly taken aback. Putting her hands on her hips, she watched him expectantly.

Robin shook his head, looking at the ground and refusing to meet her gaze. He had nothing to occupy his hands, and felt awkward and uncomfortable with her standing there, watching him so expectantly. He ran his hands through his hair, looking up at her before turning his gaze sideways.
"Nothing. It was nothing."

"Do not lie to me, Robin. I know when something is bothering you."
keeping her eyes on him, she waited for him to meet her gaze. She would not give up easily, so she stayed firm. He would talk eventually, she knew it, especially if the subject had angered him so much that he lashed out.

Robin crossed his arms, defensive at the suggestion of a lie. It also gave him something to do besides standing there, fidgeting and looking as foolish as he felt.
"Just forget it, Marian."
He could not speak about this. He had no idea how he could even find the words. How was it that she could so easily manage to make him feel so small, so vulnerable, with a few simple words? No one else even came close.

"Robin, you want me to trust you enough that I give myself to you and yet you choose what you want to tell me."
It always annoyed her, that he kept so much away from her. She understood that there were some things that he could not speak of, such as the Holy Land and she respected that. But when it came to her, she wished he would be honest.

Robin chewed on his thumbnail, watching her, deciding what on earth he could do now, before dropping his arms in frustration. Now he had done it. He had gone and made her mad again. Perfect.
"That's not fair. I tell you plenty."
The longer she stared at him, waiting, the more uncomfortable with the silence he became until he could not stand it any longer. "How am I supposed to ask you now, Marian?" the words burst out of him before he could hold them back. Not wanting to see her reaction, Robin stepped forward, picked up the bow from the ground and turned, prepared to walk away and drop the whole subject.

Marian found her breath hitching in her throat at his words, staring at him wide eyed for a moment. He really was going to ask her at some point, and now he thought he could not? Taking a step forward, she kept her eyes firmly on him. She had to be brave, she could not look away and be a coward.
"Why can't you ask me now?" she responded quietly.

Robin turned back to face her at her question.
"Because if I do, I know what you are going to think. I know why you will think I am asking."
He laced his fingers together, pressing his forehead against his hands. This was not at all how he had imagined this morning would progress. They had started out in such a good place, even as they had bickered. She had even accepted help from him. And now he was being forced into a conversation he was not at all comfortable having.

"I would not think that. Yes, it would cross my mind but i know that would not be your only reason."
She trusted him enough to know that he would not do such a thing, ask her to marry him just so he can have her. Stepping closer again, she tried to allow her body language to show that she was not that angry with him anymore. She could see him get frustrated but this was a discussion she had to have with him.

Robin dropped his hands as she stepped closer.
"You wouldn't? Are you sure about that Marian, because I find myself struggling to figure out what is going on in that head of yours."
He took a step forward, shortening the distance between them. It was the best he could do. He was trying, making an effort to not put an end to the conversation and keep everything to himself.

"I would not. Robin I know you care for more things than that."
She smiled when he stepped closer, instantly going to take his hand. She had to offer some peace offering, let him know that she was not upset with him, that she understood him. After all, he worried easily, just as she did even if he did not admit it. Squeezing his hand, she looked up at him, smiling up at him. She hoped to encourage him, stop him feeling angry or shy.

Robin laughed when she took his hand. "I am such a fool, Marian." He pulled her close, his chin resting on her head as his arms wrapped around her back. All the anxiety he had been feeling melted at her touch. He didn't think he could ever stand being physically seperated from her. He needed her presence as much as he needed food or water.
"Why you love me I will never know. However, mysteries aside, thank you. You are very good at stopping my worries."

Marian smiled when he pulled her close, her own arms wrapping around him tightly. She wanted to stay with him, and could sense him calming at her closeness. After all, if she was close then she was not angry with him and that was what he wanted.
"I have always loved you, despite my better judgement," she said, the end of her sentence changing into a slightly teasing tone.
